The Establishment of the Association
The Association of German Alumni under Royal Patronage (VTD) was founded through the coming together of a group of former Thai students and graduates of German institutions of higher education, including Dr.Chakrit Buranasamrit, Pol.Maj.General Dr.Nit Chaikiat, Mr.Porjai Chaiveru, Dr.Piya Bhirombhakdi, Mrs.Sukanya (Hiranprueck) Nimmanhaemin, Dr.Vichai Bamrungphol, Pol.Col.Samroeng Chulaka, among other distinguished individuals. They shared the view that former Thai students in Germany should be brought together and organised as an association in order to foster fellowship and cooperation among members, as well as to undertake activities for the benefit of the nation and society.
The initiative to establish such an association was rooted in the long-standing and close relationship between Thailand and Germany. Since the reign of His Majesty King Chulalongkorn, King Rama V, Thai students have travelled to Germany to pursue higher education. Upon completing their studies, many returned to Thailand to serve in various professional and academic fields, making significant contributions to the development of the country through their knowledge, professional expertise, and dedication. Among these distinguished individuals were M.L.Dej Snidvongs, Professor Dr. Prakob Hutasingh, Professor Dr.Ouay Ketusingh.
Building upon this long-standing relationship and the significant contributions of former Thai students in Germany, the Association was subsequently established on an official basis. In 1967, the establishment of the Association was formally approved. 20 September of each year was designated as the Association’s Founding Day, as it coincides with the birthday of His Majesty King Ananda Mahidol, King Rama VIII, who was born in Heidelberg, Germany, on 20 September 1925.
Subsequently, the Association was graciously placed under royal patronage, an honour of the highest significance and a profound distinction for the Association. On 24 June 1987, the Association’s name was officially amended and registered to include the designation “under royal patronage.”
Since then, the Association has continued to serve as a centre for Thai alumni of German institutions of higher education in Thailand. It has remained committed to maintaining and strengthening the longstanding bonds of friendship between Thailand and Germany, while promoting activities for the benefit of its members, society, and the nation.
